How To Remove Mould From Window Seals

Mould on your windows is normally related to the amount of condensation and is worst during the winter months, when the temperature difference inside and out is greater. Other factors such as cooking, drying clothes and a lack of ventilation can affect condensation levels and lead to mould. What does mould look like, and how do you get rid of it?

Where?

Mould is normally found around the rubber or silicone seal of a window. It can also be found on the putty, frames and the glass, and occurs more frequently when windows have not been cleaned for a long time. The mould will usually be black or green in appearance; however, it can also be red or orange depending on the spore.

Why is it a problem?

Mould on windows looks unappealing, and for this reason alone you will want to remove it from your windows. Mould is also a problem because the spores released from moulds can cause allergies and asthma attacks. If you or someone in your house is asthmatic, regular cleaning is imperative.

The worst windows for mould

Single pane windows are the worst for mould, with the difference in temperature between outside and inside leading to moisture on the window. You can solve this by using a dehumidifier; however, the best way is to reduce the temperature difference is by replacing single glazing with double glazing in Cheltenham. Companies such as Firmfix offer double glazing in Cheltenham. Not only will mould improve but also your home will be more energy efficient.

Cleaning mould from your windows

Fill a bottle with a few squirts of detergent, such as washing up liquid, and water. Make sure the detergent does not contain ammonia. Spray the windows with the mixture. The reason you spray instead of wiping is that this stops the mould releasing spores. Scrub the seals with a stiff nylon brush and rinse. Repeat a second time and mop up any excess water with a cloth.

Remember to regularly open your windows to ventilate. Add some insulation around the window if possible, as this will help. Keep wiping condensation off with a clean rag, as this prevents the mould occurring, and clean regularly. Consider painting with a high gloss paint, as this will help you to keep the area clean.
